Barclaycard - Authorised user cannot verify payment - options ?

For historical reasons, I have a joint Barclays bank account with my wife. We also both have Barclaycards. Also for historical reasons - she is the main account holder.
I have had a barclaycard since 1990 but now I am unable to verify my online payments because Barclaycard will not permit me to register my card with their App and Visa changing their rules has left me in a hole.
This has left me very frustrated and angry. Because I am "almost" retired but not yet receiving my pension, I earn very little income - we rely on my wife's for day to day spend, so I would probably not be able to successfully apply for a card with another company myself as they appear to rely on income not savings.

Are there any credit card companies that allow joint credit cards or at least provide an easy way for the authorised card holder as well as the main card holder to make on line payments via an app or OTP texts?

There is no such thing as a joint credit card. You can only have an account holder and additional users.

it is the account holder who is responsible for all the spending on them and therefore are the only one who can verify payments.

it is annoying as we are in the same position. I don’t know why the banks can’t do joint credit cards as they are no different to joint bank accounts, or at the very least allow the additional user to verify payments provided it is their card they are authorising

not sure what you mean though about online payments as my other half has their own card ( but I am the account holder ) and they can use their card anywhere including online but cannot verify online transactions by OTP.

    https://www.barclaycard.co.uk/personal/customer/confirm
    Text message
We’ll send you a one-time verification code to your UK mobile number, which you then enter into the verification screen to confirm it’s you.

I don't understand - what's the problem? All cardholers have their personal phone numbers registerd at Barclaycard.

This is how it works with AMEX additional cardholders.

They have their own account, and own verification texts - it just all goes onto the same account, and additional card holders can't see the primary holder's transactions.

They are like Chalk & Cheese.
Bank account. Both parties liable for debt.
Credit Card, only account holder is liable for debt.

Agreed but I’m sure they could make it work in the same way as bank accounts or even a mortgage where both account holders are liable.

But that would mean a credit check on each party, many of which would never qualify, as they are requested for younger family members. Such as by a parent for Uni students for emergency use.

As stated by others, there is no such thing (at least, in the UK) as a joint credit card.  The primary account holder is solely responsible for the management of the account and any debt that may accrue, the additional card-holder is just authorised to spend on the account.  Which is why you need to trust your additional card-holder not to go out on a spending spree, leaving you to pick up the tab :)
That aside, my "main" credit card is Tesco, with my wife as an additional cardholder.  Both of our phone numbers are registered, and any time authorisation is needed it pops up a message asking which cardholder is making the transaction.  Then it sends the OTP to the appropriate phone.
I'm sure many of the other mainstream cards must do a similar thing?

  • Get a card in your own right.  Go to the MSE credit cards section and see which providers would give you a card - this would be a "soft" credit check so would not affect your credit record.  Even if you get one with a low limit and/or high interest rate, take it and use it and pay it off in full every month.  Then after 12 months or so repeat the process and you should be offered a better deal.

Agreed but I’m sure they could make it work in the same way as bank accounts or even a mortgage where both account holders are liable.
With the other kinds of borrowing (loan, mortgage etc.), the amount is fixed.  With a credit card it is not.  A credit card would give one party the open ended ability to run up debt (albeit to a finite limit) that the other is liable for without their knowledge or sanction.  There is no way I would enter into any such arrangement.

What I mean is that I can use my card with my pin in a shop to buy say a £1000 TV but not online to pay £200 for car insurance.
