Because if he SORNs it, the car is still his until he's returned and can check out the new car.
If the dealer takes ownership of the car, a few days before he buys his, it's going to be a bit of a mess to unwind. Of course, it's likely much lower risk if the new car is factory new and not used.

Also because if OP sorns it he guarantees the day on which he will get any tax refund. If he leaves it to the garage they might let it roll over into the next month.sheramber said:
