I wonder if anybody can give me some help /info / guidance. I have purchased a nearly new car but cannot pick it up till the 3rd of the month ,no problem as i can tax it from this date and away i go BUT my current car is taxed for the next 11 months and if i keep it taxed to the 3rd i will loose one months tax ( £20 ) not a fortune but! i cannot collect the newer car and return mine at the start of the month as i will be  abroad on holiday.
Can i SORN my current car at the end of the month then drive it to the dealer 3 days later then notify DVLA that the car is sold ,the dealer is 4 miles from my house.
I know driving without a car being taxed is illegal but i seems daft throwing away a months tax. Any ideas ?

No you can't drive the car once you have declared the car as SORN - but you already know this.

You can only drive a vehicle with a SORN on a public road to go to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment. You could face court prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500 if you use it on the road for any other reason.

Would the dealer let you park your car at their place before you go away?
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Good idea ! not sure how you cancel tax on a car ,do you just contact DVLA and tell them it is sold? the company taking my car in part ex will send it to the auction /scrap yard as it is 20 years old

The dealer should do the ownership transfer online which cancels the tax and any refund will be sent to you.

The dealer should deal with the transfer so as suggested by theoretica could the car be left parked up there?  However be aware the DVLA will calculate the refund from the date they deal with it, regardless of the actual date on the cancellation/transfer so it’d probably have to be with them say a week before the month end to guarantee a refund from 1st. In my case I believe the refund was calculated on a daily basis

If the dealer does it online, it takes effect immediately. And the refund is on a monthly basis.
