Do UK car hire companies charge for early returns?

I am wanting to hire a car in the UK from Heathrow between 16th July and 13th August this year. When searching for quotes they all come in around the £1,000 mark for the smallest car. However if I search for 16th July and 15th August, the quotes come in around £550! Two days longer, £450 less!
If I simply return the car two days early will it cause me any problems? The T&Cs on one of the companies only refers to not issuing any refunds for early returns - this wouldn't be a problem. I just don't want to get stung for some additional fee.
Does anyone have any experience of doing this?
