    How much longer?
google for 'drain hose extension kit'
Better, but more difficult is to replace the hose with a longer one.

    About a foot longer.

I’ve collected this thing, but not entirely sure what to do with it. There didn’t seem to be a suitable connector sold by screwfix to attach an extension to the existing hose (if you can spot one, please tell me!), so I’m going to try and see if I can replace the entire hose??

    Again, not quite sure how.

I’ve been suitably terrified enough to get back in touch with the nice professional and swap him £60 for what is probably a 5 minute job.
Don't be terrified, just be aware that working on electical installations safely involves more than just making sure the right wires are in the right holes.
In the meantime, I’ve moved on to my washer/drier, which needs longer inlet & drain hoses installed. The inlet hose seems easy, but the drain hose has me stumped.

Appreciate any ideas on installing a longer drain hose - at least it won’t electrocute me!
As grumbler says, just google "drain hose extension".

Try to keep the extension as short as possible - the longer the hose the harder the pump has to work to empty the washing machine drum.

Also, if you are fitting the drain end onto a spigot rather than into an open pipe then whatever you do, don't cut the rubber fittings off the end of the hose.  Only the rubber parts can be 'squashed' sufficiently to form a water-tight seal.

I guess you need this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-outlet-hose-connector-17mm/37103 , but it's better to secure it with clips: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Connector-Washing-Machine-Dishwasher-Including/dp/B098TQ5KYB

I have a feeling that hose is intended as a replacement of an existing one, rather than as an extension.  The two ends should be the same diameter if it is an extension, whereas this one possibly has a larger diameter end which fits a standard pump spigot.

Yes I think this might be a replacement, rather than an extension.

The original hose is only about a metre - surely it can’t be too difficult to replace the whole hose, right..?

It's not difficult, but you'll have to remove the back panel and, possibly, will need pliers to deal with a spring clamp.

It can be a fiddly job, getting access to the pump is often the hardest part.  Make sure the washing machine is disconnected from the electricity supply as there will probably be bare terminals near where you are working.

Also watch out for sharp edges and sharp points of screws - there's lots of things inside a washing machine waiting to scratch and/or cut the unwary.

Hahaha, don’t worry - I’m definitely not touching anything within 6ft of a plug socket!
