Hi
Recently went to US and purchased a Lycamobile SIM OK for voice but struggled to get a decent data connection though which hampered using Google maps for navigation. Been looking at portable WiFi hotspots like the ones sold by GlocalMe. As a Tescomobile user we're about to lose roaming in the EU. The hotspots seem to offer flexible plans that can be used in 140 countries wonder if anyone has any experience of them and can recommend a product and plans. By using a hotspot you can also connect multiple devices and it's easier than tethering. Some products claim to be SIM free but think this is because they pair with a cloud SIM.

That might be worth it if you need access in many countries / many visits, but for annual holidays /short visits, then buying a local sim on arrival for your own (unlocked)phone might be a better option. Or you can pre-purchase from ebay/amazon etc in the uk before you go. Example
Most phones will allow multiple (upto 8?) device connections while tetering anyway

Don't bother.
Get a phone support eSIM and get local plan as required.
Unless you are in contact with phone, I don't see the point getting SIMO these days.
There are still PAYG with 30 days bundle includes EU roaming1
