Chase Bank and Withdrawals abroad

Hey everyone

Just for context I am in the UK

I am thinking of opening a chase bank account just to travel with abroad, not sure what other counties offer but the UK version is offering 0% fees when you use the card abroad, with 1% back on purchases.

My wife is unsure as she worries that if we go with chase we could end up in a situation where we need cash, eg buses/Dolmuş (Turkey) or markets....also thinking about markets, I don't think I could trust some of these people on Markets in Turkey, Eygpt, Tunisian or Marrakech with a card machine (not been disrespectful but I visited many of these markets over my time and they can be very cheeky.....I know other countries could be the same but this on my experince)

So I was hoping that in situations where we feel we need cash we could go to a ATM and withdraw some cash......I am not sure if we would get charged for using a ATM abroad with Chase UK.

Anybody out there using Chase for abroad and what are your experiences

Chase don't impose a charge for atm withdrawals abroad but there's a very high possibility that the bank abroad who owns the atm machine will.

The charge for their service should be advised before you request the cash giving you an opportunity to decline the transaction and try elsewhere.

Your other option could be to exchange £ cash locally (paper money only).

Yes, it works well. Does what it says on the tin

    Of course

Depends on the country and bank. Some countries, e.g. Thailand, charge to use their ATMs if you don't have an account with their bank They remove the fee from the transaction before they present it to Chase for conversion so there is nothing that Chase can do about it. It will be the same regardless of which UK card you use
In all cases specify GBP local currency rather than GBP otherwise Chase cannot do the conversion
    also thinking about markets
    Use cash in markets

I'm in SE Asia at the moment and I'm using my Chase card to withdraw cash from ATMs.
I'm not being charged by Chase but the banks' ATMs are charging me a small fee for using a foreign (to them) card each time I make a withdrawal.

I've not used my Chase card to make purchases, I use cash only.

There been no problems or issues and the card has not been blocked etc at any of the ATMs I've used.

As far as buy from markets ...... use cash!!

You mean specify whatever the local currency is, and not GBP.

There is £500 day, max £1500/month cash limit for atm withdrawals abroad which is the highest out of all the banks/cards. It works great but it's always good to have another back up eg. Starling.

If you are going to Turkey, Ziraat ATM's don't charge for taking out Turkish lira with Chase card, but there may be a daily limit, set by Ziraat bank as to how much you can take out. There may be other banks, might be worth checking on Turkish forum on likes of TripAdvisor.
Also be very observant when paying with card (any card), that you are being charged in TL and not dollars or £. Refuse to buy until they change it to TL, which they can do.

Chase don’t charge a fee, but make sure to check if the ATM abroad charges any extra fees. To get it free, you could use a currency exchange (not a scam one giving really poor rates) or just choose another ATM. You can also take some spare cash abroad just in-case.

Had been a fan of my Chase card up to now and only ever used it for card purchases where I always achieved the interbank rate (currently 1.19). On trying to withdraw cash on two occasions now, the ATM has offered an exchange rate of 0.95 instead of the 1.19 rate. Had a very frustrating online chat session with Chase who couldn't offer any help, and suggested that the rate being offered by the ATM included hidden fees, and advised me to check with the banks from which I was trying to withdraw money. Never experienced this issue with Revolut - if a cash machine is going to charge a fee, it's fairly obvious as it tells you before you complete the withdrawal. It seems that with Chase, you just can't get the interbank rate via ATMs, and they're just not upfront about that.

It looks as though you’ve selected the option for the ATM to provide the exchange rate. If so, then it’s not Chase’s fault. As others have pointed out, you should always avoid the option of setting the exchange rate at the point of sale as the rate will always be against you.

It’s reasonably well known to avoid the suggested exchange rate, but not universal.

Always transact in the local currency (ie. EUR for Europe). Same as for card purchases, ignore any attempts for the ATM to do the currency conversion for you. That way you will be letting Chase do the conversion using their much better exchange rates.

I travelled through a number of countries towards the tail end of last year using Chase as my primary travel card and never had an issue with ATM withdrawals. The ATM fees were very transparent and there was always an option to decline the conversion and use local currency.
