Printer offline

Options
I have I have a HP laser jet printer that has been perfect for the past 2 or 3 years. Suddenly it is saying it is offline and I cannot get it to connect to the router.
I have rebooted the printer, router and laptop to no avail. I have reset the printer to factory settings with no change.I have updated the driver &  I have posted messages to the HP forum with hundreds of views but no replies.

Does anyone have an inkling of an idea as to how I can get the printer to work again?

I use this printer for waterproof labels for jam. It is a hobby that earns a minimal income. I cannot afford to buy a new printer but I’m sad that a working printer is unusable for some technical - rather than physical issues . Any suggestions gratefully received.

I suspect it may be broken beyond repair, but I was curious how you had determined that it was not able to connect to the router?

Also, I'm curious as to how the printer would normally be brought online? Is there a button you press? If so, I wonder if the button has failed, or possible got some dirt under it? Sometimes HP Laserjets had a detactable faceplate (to allow the language on the front to be changed for different markets. If your machine has this, you might try removing the faceplate, cleaning under it, and replacing it.

My knowledge of HP Laser Printers is a bit old, but I can't think of any fault that would stop the printer coming online except the failure of something that the printer's CPU can detect like the failure of the fuser unit or a toner cartridge not being installed. I would expect any such error to produce an error code and error message, not just a refusal to come online.

If the printer's network interface is a seperately installable module, you might get limited error messages, but I would not expect an inability to connect to the network to prevent the printer coming on line as you might use a different interface e.g. USB.

If you are getting any error code, you could look them up here: HP Error Codes (printertechs.com).

This may be just a windows thing i.e. it may be a simple as delete and reinstall. It may have connection to the router, but windoze has lost it. It may have been allocated a new ip via dhcp. Need more info about the printer

Well since you've reset the printer it won't know about the wireless now anyway so you'll have to reconnect it to your wireless in the first instance.  May be some software on HP's website for your model for that.  Unless its a network printer/LAN connection of course, not unheard of in a home environment but more likely to be wireless.

Need to do the basics before you do anything else.  Maybe resetting the printer wasn't the best first thing to do.

I think the issue here is more likely that the printer has been given a new network address by the router.  Recommendations are that you let the router do this, but if that ever changes it causes problems further down the line if the address ever changes.

Can you move the laptop to the printer and connect it with a usb cable when you want to print?

I had the same issue with my HP Envy 5646. I had to delete the drivers and re-install from HP website.

    Thanks for the replies.
The printer is HP Laserjet Pro M452nw
My laptop is running Windows10 ( and not capable of upgrading to 11)
The laptop has the latest drivers installed.

I have logged onto the router as administrator and cannot see the printer listed.
I have tried pressing the WPS button on the router and also at a separate time the virtual button on the laptop while simultaneously or at least within the 2 minutes allowed, pressing the network button on the printer menu. It is like they are invisible to each other.
The printer is quite bulky and heavy, but I have temporarily moved it onto my desk so it is sitting beside the laptop.
I tried a USB cable to connect them but even then, although the laptop then saw the printer it still showed as offline and would not print. I did not think being online would even be relevant if printing directly via a cable.

Unplug printer USB.  In Windows, search Printers, click on Printers&Scanners, left click on your printer in the list then REMOVE it.  Restart Windows (NOT SHUTDOWN).
Plug in printer with USB then see if the printer automatically appears under Printers&Scanners.
    Print test page.

    Brilliant, thank you.
It worked on USB following your instructions above.
At least that saves it from being lobbed out of the window:)

Now, any ideas of getting it back to print without the USB? Although  if needs be I will keep it like that.
