To compensate for the outrageous s/c's I have stopped paying the TV licence fee, the net result a minor reduction in outgoings, capping the gas supply would also balance out the s/c costs but bear in mind we are due for another few years of Siberian winters if you believe in the 13 year weather cycle. Both the Beeb and the energy companies are cartels, stealing huge sums of money off the public (and the govn), IMO. Removal of both electric and gas meters would, alas, greatly devalue my residence to those who might want to buy it, many of whom would not be amused at using less than 2kW a day to make solar viable. On the other hand, I will be getting the winter fuel allowance so that covers the s/c plus a bit of heating, and keeps the rage in check.

Just because you refuse to understand how standing charges work and what they are there to cover does not make them "outrageous".

It is always sensible to balance one's budget, so if you are unable to afford energy bills cutting down on non-essentials makes sense.

We have not had a cold winter for several years now, long term forecasts indicate we probably will not get one this winter. That being said it is only worth having a gas supply capped and the meter removed if it will save money in the long run, removing gas to heat via electricity instead in general makes no sense.

Neither the energy suppliers, nor the BBC, no the government (or "the govn" as you insist on calling it) are cartels.

It would also degrade the quality of life for you and/or anyone else who happened to live there, so it would seem to be a highly illogical action. If something as simple and rational as a standing charge generates rage then it might be a good idea to speak to your GP.
