Energy Grants / insulation etc not on benefits

Hi - we have a lot of work upcoming to insulate our house (it’s freezing)! Including external wall insulation , new windows, loft insulation etc

Been looking at grants to hopefully help with the costs but as we aren’t on benefits and over 31k income we don’t appear to be accepted.

House is EPC D in Sheffield.

Anyone know of any grants we might be able to qualify for ?

The Warmer Homes Sheffield website says the connected for warmth insulation scheme is for low and middle income households? You might qualify as middle income? The form doesn’t seem to ask about earnings. That grant only covers loft or cavity wall insulation though- EWI never seems to get a look in with any grants.

Unfortunately not enough money gets allocated to upgrade the UK’s leaky housing stock… shame England doesn’t have an interest-free loan scheme like Scotland.

The lack of insulation in the loft can be fixed by you going to Wickes and buying a load then installing it.  It's basic labouring, zero skill required.  You will need a decent pair of scissors though.  That will save you needing a grant to pay for labour.

Most difficult bit when I did mine was climbing the ladder into the loft as I have MS and my balance is decidedly mediocre.  It was a ball-ache of a job as my home is a bungalow so there was a lot of area and it took me several weekends, but it only cost me a few hundred in materials and made a noticeable difference to my gas consumption.

It means nowhere for air to move in and out of the cavity. If for instance cold air can get into the cavity from the loft or around windows it defeats the purpose of the insulation.

How good are you with DIY ?
Loft insulation is something that most able bodied people can do themselves very cheaply. Wall insulation, done internally, is also possible to do on a DIY basis with the final finish done by a professional plasterer - You might need the services of a plumber and/or an electrician if sockets or radiators need moving and you are not comfortable with either.
Replacement doors & windows are best left to the professionals (and do check to see if lintels are required on the outer leaf of brickwork). Paying someone to fit windows/doors avoids the need to deal with Building Control, and an experienced fitter should be familiar with the quirks of your house. If you go for wall insulation on the outside, the windows/doors will need extended sills, so you need discuss with the installers about options on that point.
