Does it need to be MS Office?
There are plenty of free, or paid for, alternatives.
    Libreoffice has already been mentioned.
I have used Softmaker Free office for years, no problems it's fully compatible with MS Office. There is a Paid for version if you want the latest bells and whistles but the free version is fine.
Other Office packages are available, try one or more before shelling out on MS Office.

Anyone selling 'Office Professional Plus' (as opposed to just 'Office Professional') is selling you a volume licensing key which may or may not stop working if Microsoft detect it being used suspiciously.
As mentioned there are some great free alternatives, but don't be caught out by claims of them being 'fully compatible'. Good luck getting them to run VBA or Office Scripts, and don't be surprised if they can't cope with functions like xlookup. For many people that's not a problem, just think about what level of compatibility you need.

    Exactly.

If you just want to do your own straightforward stuff then they may be acceptable. If you want to collaborate with others using the real thing, or use templates from third parties (colleges, universities etc) it can rapidly become a nightmare.

I know the site is all about saving money but sometimes there are false economies or life is simply too short!

    try ebay as well

I use word and excel only - office 2007 - does everything I need
Unfortunately with very old versions you'll find them out of support - it looks as if Office 2007 has been out of support for almost 6 years now, so there will be security risks using it, particularly on machines connected to the internet.
