Cost for a new back gate - seems excessive

Options
We are being quoted £490 - £575 for a new back gate. 6ft by 1m basic design

I don't know but it seems a lot to me? Given we had a 6ft by 7m fence installed for £900 last year. Maybe its about right?

Seems maybe a little high, but not hugely.

Made to measure? Fitted to the existing posts?
    900x1800mm / 920x1820mm gates are £100-£150 at SF delivered and it's 1-hour 1-man job or DIY.
1m is some uncommon size. Are you sure?
  • So is that just supply a gate and fit to existing posts?  Does it include ironwork? Will they need to dig out holes to sink posts?

I installed a new garden gate last weekend, but the work including digging out an 18" deep x 450mm square hole to sink a 0.1m square x 8' tall post in postcrete.  It took me a lot longer than an hour to complete working alone, and the gate and ironwork from Ruby were more like £250, but rather more robust than the screwfix item.

12mm plained T&G doors look robust enough to me. At least compared to basic feather edge that I have.

Are they sourcing, delivering and installing?

Or have you found the gate and posts, ironwork and have them ready to put in?

I recently replaced a gate of similar size. It's a side gate across a walkway between the house and property boundary so I wanted a custom size to suit.

I had one made to size from https://all-gates.co.uk/ for about £140 plus delivery, and fitted it myself using the hinges, latch etc. from the old gate as they were very solid and in good condition. Hanging it was pretty straightforward, especially with adjustable hinges.

The gate I had was framed ledged and braced with closeboard cladding, so a fairly basic finish, but they do fancier looking ones if desired.

Out of interest I just checked the same website for the cost of their fancier gates. The same sized ones with tongue and groove clad pinned and glued morticed and tenoned frames, with a variety of shapes e.g., curved top with horns, look to cost around £400-£450, so not far off the price you were quoted. Those gates come unfinished though, so you'd have to treat/paint the timber as well as hanging it. The basic one I had came pressure treated so a bit less effort needed.

Depends on what type of wood you are going to use, we had ours made from heavy duty planks, to a basic but bespoke design ( if you get my meaning) £300/£400, ( can’t remember exact figures) ..
