Do we always have to apply for probate?

We didn't need probate for my Nan. She died earlier this year. She had a bit over 20K in her bank account in one account and a credit of less than £1 in a savings account (same bank). She'd been in a care home for some years my Mum had POA and is executor of her will. The bank didn't need probate as the estate was considered too small. They froze Nan's bank account when informed of her death for a few weeks, and were provided with both her death certificate and copy of her will.
*IF* I understood the registrar correctly when we registered Nan's death, there is no national limit for probate, banks decided their own if they are just dealing with how much is in accounts. When i googled this, by chance Nan's account was at a bank that sets a higher amount before requiring probate.
I say *IF* because I might not have taken everything in in the days following Nan's death. She was elderly and ill but she died very quickly, so was still a but of a shock, so apologies if I've not quite got this story correct.1 -
