  • Well done for taking him on. Sounds like the best solution all round!

Most cats will use a litter tray if deperate, or just wait until next time they can go outside if they're really not keen. Some like to have a different one for wees and poos though, so something to bear in mind if it doesn't go to plan in that regard.

When I was  a child we had a cat. A kitten followed my father home one night and it stayed.

Our existing cat was not impressed but out up with it.  She started visiting a neighbour who lived down the back from us.

One day she came in to find a couple of kittens in a box with the mum. She turned round  and went to stay with said neighbour from that day.

He seems fine with the litter tray, although he would clearly rather go outside whenever possible. Not sure if his reaction was guilt or embarrassment the first couple of times, but once he realised that that was where he was meant to go he's been fine since.
We let him eat plenty for the first few days but are now limiting it to what we were told he was being fed before.  I think it took him a couple of days to accept that there will always be food here, but we're settled into a routine for filling his bowls.

Thanks to everyone for your advice, support, and kind words.
