I think the whole 'questionable quality' side of things is perhaps where there is confusion - in my view, a budget Samsung/Nokia/Motorola isn't of questionable quality - it's just as good quality as a flagship, it's just lower specification, so not good for more demanding every day use such as photos/gaming etc.
I've only had two Android phones, both at the budget end of the market. Certainly the fingerprint reader on the Nokia was poor quality as it allows a friend to unlock it with their fingerprint. Tried an old iPhone just to see and it could distinguish us. I know its similar with facial recognition, cheap phones use the camera and 2D recognition whereas higher end phones use LIDAR or IR etc to do 3D recognition.
The analogy to desktop computers isnt the same because few desktops have built in security devices outside of Apple0 -
Interesting, I don't tend to use biometric security much to be honest, perhaps I should! - Just tried it on my new laptop and it seems a bit inconsistent, but perhaps I need to get used to it0
