How does one come off Self Assessment?

Hi Everyone.
So I've dutifully completed a self assessment tax return each year since a couple of years back on receipt of  a settlement on leaving my last job.
I've done the HMRC wizard this year (it seems a lot longer in length than it used to be) and it tells me that I do not need to submit a self assessment tax return. It also says that no information is sent to HMRC.
So what do I do now?  Do I simply not submit a self assessment return this year or do I need to contact HMRC and get their confirmation?
Many thanks.

Do not just stop, you will get fined and then be made to complete self assessment. How was the settlement declared, as income from employment, from self employment, another source?

You may need to complete one last return, you may not need to complete any more, the best option is to call HMRC, get them to de register you and then you are sorted.

So have HMRC sent you notification to do a self assessment?
I did wizard that also showed self assessment unnecessary after receiving notification from HMRC to complete for 22/23.

This was my post recently that suggested to ring HMRC but will also check if can be done online.

I phoned HMRC about my code and they said they wondered whether I needed to do SA any longer (had multiple employers and allowances - now retired) - they went through some questions and said that I no longer needed to do so took me off the system

I would be waiting for written notification which is what they do.

Except in my case, the deregistration had some kind of IT glitch, and I was lost in a HMRC wilderness between SA and 'not SA'

There were no further requests to fill in SA, but at the same time my automatic end of year P800 calculation was not happening. I did not really click what was happening as my tax was OK/simple, until I stopped work and was owed some tax . Cue four unproductive calls to HMRC ( they acknowledged the problem but could only put the issue in a work queue to be resolved at some point.) Eventually I made a  complaint and it was sorted out.

Typical of the service we are now forced to endure?

The freezing of tax allowances and the reductions in the annual capital gains tax exemption and dividend allowance will add millions more taxpayers to a system that cannot cope now. Tax agents cannot use their helpline until June except for a couple of routine matters.
  • Thanks for the very helpful replies everyone. I think they all point towards  my best course of action being to contact HMRC and ask to be deregistered. I will do this.
I tried their fancy virtual assistant, which simply pointed me towards the wziard.
TBH my affairs are simple and completing SA only takes a few minutes, but I rather not go through the bother if I don't need to!

  • Just to be clear you need to specifically ask for the 2022-23 return to be withdrawn.

Otherwise all that would happen is you would be removed from Self Assessment for the 2023-24 return onwards.
