Smart meter dosent tally with actual bill

With Scottish power and even though my smart meter tells me I’ve used £200 p/m for gas and electricity combined I get charged over £300p/m on my quarterly bill contacted SP they say the larger amount is correct what is the point of a smart meter as i can’t follow my usage and budget accordingly SP have basically said tough it is what it is has anyone had a similar experiences with there smart meters and energy providers?

Do you mean the smart meter or the IHD?

If you are talking about the little display device, that's the in-home display (IHD) not the smart meter.  They are often wrong because the tariff details aren't updated every time.  If you change it to the screen where it shows usage in kWh that will be more accurate.

Does the meter reading on the bill agree with the reading on the smart meter? The smart meter is not the small IHD, it is the wall mounted device near your fusebox.
  • I didn’t know they was a difference to be fair 🤷🏻‍♂️so what’s the point of the little ihd then ?

I encourage everyone to keep a spreadsheet alongside their IHD for a sanity check. Occasionally my IHD adds the values for two days and even the Bright app is now getting the cost calculation wrong (I'm on E7) for every Sunday since the clocks went forward, even though the energy total is correct. The EDF hub also gets the cost wrong for the odd days too. Of course all this is irrelevant as the supplier's bill just calculates the opening and closing readings as would your spreadsheet.

The little IHD is just a display. It connects to the smart meter communications hub via a Home Area network. The smart meter system is designed to give you electricity power (kW) and usage (kWh) information from the electricity meter which updates every 10 secs. Gas information usage (kWh) updates every 30 minutes.

For cost information to be accurate on the IHD, the supplier must update the tariff information which is stored in each of the meters. Not all suppliers are good at updating meters.

In truth, the IHD is little more than an ornament. I am with Octopus and I prefer to use an App that gets its information directly from my energy account not my smart meters. The information is near accurate (gas cost can be slightly out due to calorific value differences as is the case with any IHD):

Is this an Octopus app or is there a generic one?

I am with E.ON Next and their app is very limited for daily data as is the online site.

Fortunately my IHD is spot on and allows me to compile a comprehensive usage history.

The data on the IHD should agree exactly with your smart meter which in turn should agree with your bills.

The IHD allows you to monitor your usage and identify when you are consuming energy at a high rate. This is turn could allow you to target high consumption devices and trends and reduce them if possible.

‘Should agree’ or might not? Power and usage will be accurate but cost may be wrong if the supplier has not updated the tariff information in each of the meters.

Octopus Watch; Octopus Compare and Octo-Aid are all third-party apps that use an API to connect to an Octopus account. They should all work with any supplier that provides a bespoke consumer API.
