Number porting question

Hi All, apologies in advance if this is a stupid question!
I am currently on a pay monthly deal with Three which ends at the end of May.
I am considering getting a new phone at the end of the contract, but there are a number of good deals around now for Easter. My question is this, can I take out new contract with a different company, and then port my old number at the end of May when I avoid the early termination charges? I'm aware that this means I'll be paying for 2 contracts simultaneously for a month or two, but with cashback etc. I think I can negate the effect of that.
So the question really is, can I port a number to my new contract a month or so in to the contract?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Have you asked Three what your early termination fees will be? Surely less than continuing to pay the current rental!

No problem at all, you can port a number at any point into a contract.anicecuppa said:

In any case, I've found that those "special, this week only, rush now!" deals will still be there in a month or 2, probably with some shiny new models.1 -
Thanks both. J_B - there's very little difference between the two figures - but because of the way I'm paid (and how expenses work) it makes more sense to make the final two monthly payments.
flaneurs_lobster - thanks for the clarification. As for the deals point - therein lies my dilemma; as you say - good deals tend to come around all the time - so is it really worth the hassle versus the risk/opportunity? I don't expect you to answer that - I'll have to make that decision!
Thanks again.0
