Since he doesn't use it much and doesn't want a flashy phone have a look at the 12 month upfront offers on https://www.time2talk.co.uk, its on cashback but you don't have to remember to do anything - you pay all the line rental at the beginning of the year and automatically get credited ALL of it back to your bank account (the prices quoted are charged by them, not taken out of the cashback).0

It's a cashback deal, thought you didn't want that!
If you don't want to do cashback then you can forget a good deal - you'll just have to pay full price. Only other way is an upgrade deal really.0 -
There are some good deals on the 'pay up front' basis - it is cash back but you get it all after 2 bills - time2talk as above and also scancom.com and chatterbox.com for t230 deals.I think....0

Much more of a risk going with those companies than a 12 month cashback deal with some1 like CPW.0 -
Would have thought there are two options - go for an O2 Talkalot SIM - £10 topup and 100xnet minutes free each topup - or go for a contract with a high end phone that you can sell on.
On the second option - this is a cashback deal BUT say you ignore the cashback. The cost is 3 mths @ £9.99 plus 9 @ £27 = £273 - you'll probably sell the phone for £180 so total cost is £93pa or £7.75pcm. Go through Quidco and reduce it by a further £30pa.You get 150xnet mins a month and 50 texts. For a little work cashback deals with the more reliable retailers are well worth it.0 -
If you like the idea of contract, but don't use it much, and don't want to bother with cashback, maybe get a phone on Virgin then post-pay by DD. You can look for cheap calls providers 0871 callthrough numbers to make x-net calls for 15p/min, better than 35p.
But a cashback deal is still likely to be the best value; as the others say, some have only one transaction and it may be automated. T-moblie have the pay 12 months uofront option and you should be able to remember to send the first bill off.0
