    A terrible quick sketch to explain probably what happened based on your posts:



    Black line left to right is the main cable in the street.  Black lines up and down are the connections to each house.

    The fault was where the yellow lightning is - on the main joint.

    They have cut the cables in the three places marked in red and then added new cable where the blue lines are, connected by new joints at the red marks where they originally cut.

    In the above picture you can see the three cable joints that @CSI_Yorkshire has described; two big fat joints top and bottom in the main supply cable for the street, and a little one off to the left that connects your neighbour's supply.
    The two new pieces of cable are the thick one between the fat joints, and the skinny one that comes out of the bottom of the lower fat joint and leads off to the little joint on the left.
    There's also a second skinny cable that comes from the top of the lower fat joint and leads off to the right. This is supplying another neighbour via the cable joint in the picture below.
