    Can you confirm for us:

The meter reading when you moved in.
The meter reading on the 9/2 (assuming you took a reading when EDF took the account back?)
Whether the bill shows "estimated" or "actual" against the 9/2 reading.
    The meter reading today.

I think a point that didnt come across too well is that I am not trying to get out of paying. that is not the reason for my plea of help, it is more to understand what is happening and if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Before I pay £800 I need to know why I am paying it. which is why I need a bill from edf for the missing time period. then I will be happy to pay it.

if they come back with a bill and it states that my energy usage is £795 for all usage between 19/12 and 17/03, then this is still a large amount of money for what I believe my consumption is? £270/ month for a studio? granted, it is all electric, however the hot water tank is small, everything is washed by hand and washing machine is used as infrequently as possible. Any other input is much appreciated.

Did you supply them with any data (meter reads) that would allow them to give you a clearer bill?

What did they bill you for? If it is the energy used between the last meter reading you supplied in December and the reading from March that is all you can ask for.

The meter reading when the account was re-opened on 9th February should be exactly the same as the closing meter reading from EDF when the account was switched in error in December.

So, although the bill might appear to only be from February, it also includes all your usage from the time the account was not with EDF.

I am assuming that the OP did not pay Pozitive Energy for any units
thats correct, I didnt have access to the pozitive energy account, so didnt pay for any usage while the account was with them

If your account came back via the Erroneous Transfer system, the bill will be correct.
The way it works is that that same reading is used to start the new account that was used to close the old one. So if the supply left on a read of 12345, your first bill, regardless of the date it is from will start on 12345.
Unfortunately this looks like you have used a huge amount of electricity in a sort space of time when in reality, it’s from when the supply originally left

I gave them a Meter reading on the 17/03. on the bill it shows that they are billing me from the 9th feb to 17th march. the reading on 9/02 is an estimate and the reading from 17/03 is an actual. I think this may be where the issue lies

understandable, however it still seems a huge amount. it works out to around £270/month? which is a lot of money for my consumption

There could only be a problem if the estimated meter reading for the 09/02 is lower than the final meter reading. If that is the case they would bill you twice.

In other words do you have an invoice that shows an end reading higher than the estimated reading?

What was your start reading when you moved in, what was the reading in March and what did you pay already and what are they asking you to pay?

What are the unit rates and standing charges?

Also on the bill you received for how many days do they bill you standing charges?

just got off the phone with edf. they have said that the bill was incorrect and has now gone down to £486. they said that this was because of an incorrect meter reading on the 17th march, which is strange because they made me send a picture of my meter via email for them to read, so unsure of how they got it wrong. this means I no longer have access to the original £795 bill, but dont have access to the new bill either as it says will be ready in 24hrs. I will update on here if there are any issues with the new bill.

I really appreciate all your help.

The average annual all-electric usage is 4200kWh, so your total EDF metered usage is probably about right.
Just make sure you're on single rate, not E7.
Unfortunately daytime electricity is the most expensive heating you can have.
Ideally you should move to a property with gas central heating, or at least High Heat Retention Night Storage Heaters (e.g. Dimplex Quantum) but I realise that may be unrealistic.
Also do the Meter Sanity Test.
