London - Livingstone, Zambia

Need advice about the above journey that I'm hoping to make.

Have 300K avios to burn but BA don't fly this route so BA flies to Johannesburg and then Airlink flies the Johannesburg - Livingstone leg.

My options are

Option 1 - Book each leg directly and use the Avios for the London - SA leg. 
Option 2 - Book via BA for the entire trip and pay cash.

Would I need to clear customs for example if I choose option 1 but not if I chose option 2?  There's a 3 1/2 hr gap potentially so would this be a big enough gap if I needed to?

There's normally an option to part pay in Avios when you book flights. I'm not sure whether this would represent good value for you as it's not something that I've done but I'd be concerned about booking separate tickets as you're leaving yourself open to missing the connection.

You could always ring them to see what they say.

Thank you for your help....I decided to book it as one flight with BA and managed to upgrade my seats using Avios (if I have to fly for 12 hrs I'm flying in comfort!)

A big plus with that route is that you won’t be jet lagged either way and if you’ve upgraded to business you should arrive reasonably refreshed.
