YEs living in a caravan would be good training for space management! in my case I know we have more space than we need at the moment but it does often feel full up!
Im sure there must be at least 30% of our possessions that we dont use/ handle that regularly - that really could go - for example that pineapple slicer from hawaii which I've used twice and the sewing machine - which my mum is now in possession of (you can see where the hoarding comes from now!)
Yes PPolly I love the sample homes in Ikea too!
Ellidee you could be right there but its just a little tooo comfortable - even DH has noticed the difference!:j Where there is a will there is a way - there is a way and I will find it :j0 -

I really think that is what I need to consider carefully. I'm sure there is a better way to store thingsWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0 -
I find sticking things up in the loft (thats - if you have one of course) trick comes in handy. Its a double shift - shift to loft, then shift out the door - but its one way to tackle things. Putting stuff you are unsure about keeping in the loft first whilst you think about it (and then quite often it ends up heading out the door because you've not wanted it enough to head up to the loft for it).0

I've done that too, ceridwen, in the past. Think this coming weekend will need to be used to clear lots of stuff. I know I always feel so much better in myself when things are clear and simplified. We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0

Hi,
my tip to simplify life is to buy socks which are all exactly the same!...... I have 2 Boys (2.5 and 5) and always seemed to end up with loads of odd socks and struggled to find any matching pairs. Now the eldest has only white socks and my youngest has blue stripey socks.....I don't waste time now trying to find pairs of socks!
Hope that makes sense!

I'm pleased to report there are now NO books in my eaves - I guess as ceridwen said, putting them out of sight was part of a very long process of seeing which ones were important.
Anyhow, all my remaining books are back in the light again!
Tomorrow, friends are coming to take a load of wood from my garage. A couple of years ago I wanted to install a woodburner but was eventually put off by the huge installation costs - there is no flue or chimney so an external flue was required.
wmf and ceridwen, thanks for your kind thoughts and words. I too am delighting in the sense of emerging clarity - tho there's still quite a way to go - good to being seeing progress! If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

Hi All
Zippy, I do the same for hubby with his socks, they are all black, it makes life much easier.
On the old versus new house, I prefer my newish (1984) houuse to my last old house, I don't like housework at the best of times & I could never keep the old one clean & tidy, my new house is a lot easier to maintain.

Hi
all this talk about de-cluttering is giving me itchy fingers, can't do much though until I finish studying in July. OH and I have completely different views on this. He doesn't care if all his stuff spreads everywhere, he never de-clutters and has 60 shirts:eek: . Not to mention the shorts, trousers ect. I'm used to living in a small space and it drives me nuts. We have a 1950's ex-council house in a cul-de-sac. Have no intentions of leaving here, we can't even hear our neighbours teenage sons when they crank the music up. Plus I know all my neighbours and our Son can play out. A rare thing these days.

Makes perfect sense to me Zippy - I'm gradually rationalising in that direction - one style only/one colour only/from one shop only (in my case that means black ankle socks from M & S).0
