Is there nothing you can sell to keep on top of your rent payment? Old computers, mobile phones, games consoles? I would prioritise using any spare cash to keep up with rent over any other bills or expenses (except for food or child-related expenses).2023 Mortgage-Free Wannabe #19: £11,675.68/£13,000

How did the conversation with the landlord go Leigh? Or did you manage to find a way of getting the other half of the payment together?(Selling is a good idea, but unless you’re going with a cash converters type model where you’ll get a fraction of any actual value, it’s not necessarily a guaranteed fast solution.)🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Being pedantic there is no such thing legally speaking as her half of the rent. As joint tenants you each have joint and several liability for paying the full rent. I am a landlord and if you contacted me before the rent was late and have otherwise been good, long standing tenants, I would be willing to work something out with you. If you leave it until the rent is due I'd be slightly less willing.

You can stop paying your unsecured debts. Write to each of them and explain the situation. Ask that they suspend interest charges and repayments for three months to give you time to get yourself in order financially. They will do this because they essentially don't have any other option. They could take you to court but a court will throw it out if you are taking reasonable steps to repay these debts. That includes prioritising rent, council tax, utilities and secured debts first.
Don't take any calls from them. Ask that everything be conducted in writing. Unsecured lenders will phone you to try to get you to pay and will make all sorts of threats about CCJs and bailiffs. Worse than that you can't trust anything they tell you over the phone as I have found out to my cost. If they do go through with any threats they are many months away and fairly easy to stop. Just write to them and set them aside until the 1st August. Put a note in your diary to write to them a few days before this deadline expires with a new I&E form and an offer to resume payment at a rate you can afford.
You have to live so pay rent, council tax, utilities are you top priorities. Secured debts are next, followed by debts to friends and family. Unsecured debts are last. If you can reduce your outgoings then do so but bear in mind that you can't just sit in the dark and do nothing without going mad and that courts and lenders do allocate a reasonable amount for entertainment and other expenditure.0 -
you go from where things are today. Very little you can do about what's past. It's the future you need to concentrate on.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1

Hi all
Hope your all OK.
The last 24 hours for me have been tough mentally after hearing my Hire Purchase loan had been defaulted and the car being repossessed or being handed back Voluntarily by myself at some point. I'm devastated... didn't sleep at all last night thinking about it.
I have no one too blame but myself for ending up in this position with my addiction troubles, actions and complete stupidness over the last 6 months or so... I have literally pressed the nuclear red button on my life and watch it all unravel quickly from a relatively good place too absolute destruction.
Once I had recieved the news of the default I started too research if there was anything I could do about the reposession of the car. I found out that I can apply too the county court for something called a Time Order which if granted can do a number of things but in basic terms allow me more time too get myself back on track with my car payments.
This is the route I'm going to have too take now as a last chance before I lose my car. National debt line have a page on their site explaining it all, I also spoke too them in the online chat about it. I basically have 2 options now after being defaulted...
A. Fill the N440 form out along with supporting info like a budget etc and pay £308 fee.
Or
B. Wait until the finance company take it too court after attempted reposession and then apply for the Time Order for free in response to their court action against me.
The problem I have is i havent got £308 right now too apply for the time order and with option b is that my car is parked on the public road and due too me not having paid at least a third of the loan off they can just come and take the car without a court order. National debtline advised that I would need too "protect" the car in some way until I could get the funds too pay for the order or until they took it too court.
I'm desperately thinking of how I can either get money together quickly and hope the order gets granted in my favour.. or think of how I can "protect" my car long enough too find the funds or court action against me to apply for free.
I need the car too get too work and earn money and be able too fulfill other commitments I have. If I lose it then things are and will get a lot worse for me. I have thought about handing it back or let it be repossessed and then car share with my partner... but this simply won't work as we tried it before for a short period of time and it was a complete nightmare for us both.
Sorry for the very long post on this subject, i needed too let it out and get off my chest somewhere.DEBT FREE AS OF 28/6/17 :j:beer:0 -
Can you not speak to your finance company about the car ?
Your creditor should only repossess goods if they can’t get the money back any other way.
If you’re struggling to make regular payments, let your creditor know.
Honestly, the last thing they want is to have to repossess it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. When I recieved the email about my loan being Defaulted, I rang them immediately too discuss it. I pleaded with them too come to some sort of agreement too clear arrears and was told several times that now it was in default there was nothing else they can do their end unless I paid the full balance too clear the loan.
I had missed a payment in December and Febuary previously... and this was the third missed payment which triggered them too default the loan.
The absolutely stupid thing about the third missed payment which was due Tuesday was I simply hadn't moved enough money across too my account the direct debit comes out of and not reacting quick enough too get it paid. Again another monumental mistake by me which has led too this getting a lot worse.
Last night whilst deep in though about it all I read about getting help with court fees. I am going too apply online for this, and also get the form filled in and any other bits I need too provide with it too support my case. I'm not sure I will qualify for my fees too be paid tbh but it will at least allow me too go to the court first thing Tuesday morning and hand in all in too get the ball rolling with the Time Order.
