Believing I could apply for probate online I didn't send the IHT421 form with the IHT400 package to HMRC. What is the best thing to do now? Should I send the form separately to HMRC or just apply online for probate and they will match up the application with the IHT400 when it's cleared HMRC? (There should be no Inheritance Tax payable on the estate.) All help appreciated.

Once you’ve sent your completed IHT400 form to HMRC, you need to wait 20 working days before you can apply for probate.
And when you follow the link the options include online.
Presumably the IHT400 had to be submitted because it’s not an excepted estate?

Thanks for replying. The issue is I mistakenly thought I could apply for Probate after 20 working days directly to the Probate Office & so didn't send an IHT421 form to HMRC along with my completed IHT400. I see now that they are supposed to stamp it and send it to the Probate Office themselves. I'm unsure now whether I complete and send an IHT421 to HMRC and they deal with it after processing IHT400 or whether I can just apply for Probate online after the 20 days and they will still deal with it.Sarahspangles said:Once you’ve sent your completed IHT400 form to HMRC, you need to wait 20 working days before you can apply for probate. And when you follow the link the options include online.

Have you looked at the probate form yet? There’s a question there ‘Did you complete IHT forms’ and I assume a ‘Yes’ triggers them checking with HMRC on progress with that.Fashion on the Ration
