I spoke to Nationwide and they suggested that I can apply for the ISA transfer today, and they will backdate it to show that the ISA transfer was completed during the current tax year. Do you think this is feasible or is it too risky? 

Don’t do it as a transfer, ask Halifax to cancel (not close) the new ISA - that way it will ‘never have happened’.  Get on with opening a new Nationwide ISA.
