If the holiday was cancelled because the flight was cancelled (seems most likely) then you might be able to claim compensation of £350 per passenger under the UK equivalent of EC261 regulations.  It will depend on the flight cancellation reason though, if it's extraordinary circumstances then they won't have to pay.
Thanks. We believe (though they haven't said) the flight was cancelled because of industrial action of their staff. Not sure if that would be 'extraordinary '. For personal reasons we really needed to go this week and booked this ages ago. Being faced with additional £600 costs and a lot of stress is very frustrating.
The airline is responsible for their own staff. Most airlines would have moved appropriate crew around to ensure they are adequately crewed (OH spent less than half of working days last year flying from her contractual base, but doesn't work for Easyjet).

This will be compensationable at EU rates assuming it's an EJU flight number.

Your insurer would be the ones to go to for losses, depending on the terms of your policy.

I have never had problems with Easyjet but would never book Ryanair.
Ryanair have been very reliable in the last year for me (mainly UK-Poland and the reverse). The worst arrival delay has been about 40 minutes on an evening Stansted-Katowice service.

For another service with a plane stuck somewhere they managed to get an aircraft and crew to Stansted from Dublin to operate the flight without a delay, can't really ask for a lot more than that.
