Easyjet holiday cancellation less than 12 hours to depature

We were due to fly to Portugal at 6.50 tonight (2nd April) for a Easyjet holiday. 10.30 this morning we get an email saying holiday is cancelled.  No explanation offered no alternative offered. Later today offered alternative 18th April. No use as my daughter is a teacher. After 3 hours of frantic searching we have managed to book another holiday with another company for double the price. Can we claim compensation beyond a full refund offered?

If the holiday was cancelled because the flight was cancelled (seems most likely) then you might be able to claim compensation of £350 per passenger under the UK equivalent of EC261 regulations.  It will depend on the flight cancellation reason though, if it's extraordinary circumstances then they won't have to pay.

Thanks. We believe (though they haven't said) the flight was cancelled because of industrial action of their staff. Not sure if that would be 'extraordinary '. For personal reasons we really needed to go this week and booked this ages ago. Being faced with additional £600 costs and a lot of stress is very frustrating.

EasyJet’s Portuguese cabin crew have been striking this weekend. Some flights crewed by Lisbon, Faro based crews have seen disruptions and some cancellations.  Was it a EJU flight prefix?

Industrial action by the airline’s own staff is not normally classed as ‘extraordinary’ so you may well have a claim.

As an aside, lots of flights have however been disrupted this weekend due to industrial action by French ATC.

Yes it was an EJU flight number. Hoping we can be compensated for out of pocket expenses we have incurred in booking a holiday at the last minute with another provider at an increased cost at a lower star hotel.

You may have a claim for EU261 compensation to off set the inconvenience. I don't think however you will have a claim or luck to claim the difference in cost for your new holiday plans from another travel firm.

I have never had problems with Easyjet but would never book Ryanair.

Never had a problem with Ryanair, to be honest I've found them one of the most reliable airlines I use.

Because they are cheap and generally reliable. While they take a lot of criticism I find both airlines to be perfectly serviceable. If you think using a more expensive airline is going to somehow exempt you from bad service then you're kidding yourself. The worst service I ever received was with BA.

Flown easyJet Ryanair Wizz Air regularly in the last couple of years as well as BA Air France Icelandair Avianca and others.

Honestly find them all to be much of a muchness.
