I am in Spain now.  I don't have that amount of cash.  I have not been arrested.

OMG! Your cash has been stolen?!

To be honest I'd imagine flashing a credit card would be enough nor will they check your credit limit..
That's just it, all seems quite pointless! But then our own country is very good at imposing ridiculous bureaucracy on people as well.

It's not pointless, it just does not apply to the genuine tourist.

Agreed the rule is there for good reason - someone who is not a genuine tourist who intends to live and work in the country without first obtaining the correct visa to do so .

So someone who has no hotel booked, a very small amount of cash and no credit cards available (without a reasonable explanation )  can be turned away .

Tourists with hotels already booked and credit cards will not be refused entry .

Some (maybe many ?) punters misunderstood the £85 rule and thought they HAD to spend that daily in Spain, whereas the criteria is to have the ability to fund themselves to that amount where appropriate - which is not the same thing.
Those on All Inclusive holidays were especially indignant.
The usual suspects in the British media which presented misleading sensationalist headline stories were badly at fault IMO.
