Any paint roller seems unusable after 20 minutes!

I have never got my head around this when you are trying to paint a room.

After 20 minutes the pile of any paint roller sleeve has flattened and it’s clogged with residual paint.   So it’s pretty much unusable for applying more paint.

I presume you don’t actually need 20 sleeves to paint one room, so what is the solution?

I know they can be washed out, should I be doing that in the middle of painting a room?   Do I need say 5 sleeves on rotation?

Or is the issue that I am not watering down the paint?

It is an emulsion and I am using medium pile microfibre sleeves.

I’ve just painted a 3 bed house with 2 rollers, one for white and one for magi, the pile does go flat, it’s natural.
They don’t need washing out, just put the roller in a plastic bag until you’re ready to use it again, be ok for 5 days.

  • Never had a problem with rollers, even older ones that I have cleaned.

There are bound to be online videos showing techniques, maybe have a search and see what is going wrong for you?

Okay so you should still be able to apply fresh paint just as well with a saturated and flat sleeve?

It applies better than a fresh roller sleeve, they have to be worked in, just like a new brush.

Are you using a roller tray?

If you are you can use the ribbed parts to adjust how loaded  your roller is before presenting to the wall, overloaded does give problems like you describe.

What you get after 20 minutes is a norm. Initially the roller takes more paint than it normally does. Don't overestimate its capabilities.

And don’t roller up and down, roller on a 45% angle 📐 as well. Go around the perimeter of the wall/ceiling cutting in  about 2or 3 inch first. I use a 3” brush.

As plumb1_2 said, stick it in a plastic bag. If you wash the sleeves, or brushes inbetween coats the water left in them mixes with the paint and runs.
A friend of mine used a spinner to clean the sleeves. It's a lot quicker.
