I wonder if i can ask if someone else though this excessively expensive as the home has normally 3 storage, and 2 wall mounted heaters in the home (council tower block) and obviously hasn't got gas installed, but has a 2-rate meter, and only heaters on in winter are 2 of the storage heaters instead of the whole house. but currently seems to be costing around £270 per month for he total electricity costs, i honestly thought that initially there seems to be a hell of an bill to pay. The house also has a heated water tank that is only switched on every 2 night also now. But i wondered if anybody has any thoughts as what i can do initially, The bills are with Scottish Power. I am relaying info so don't have all the info just now, but i went up and sat for a while but it didnt seem like much electricity was being used that would cost that amount of usage.

There is no fixed answer I am afraid.

Saw 1 post from elderly customer on a studio flat - over £300 pm whole back.

And he said the flat was cold all winter.

If a lossy flat - if single glazed, drafty, even living room out of the sun etc it all makes a difference.

As does the temperature its being kept at.

21 will be £100s more pa than 18 etc - obviously weighted to winter months.
The often quoted figure is £100 pa per degree C - but suspect that was old gas prices - not current - and even E7 electric off peak generally more expensive.

And SP have a few weird legacy tariffs that don't get that cheap off peak rates I some regions.

Figures in kWh and the tariff rates / payment method might help.  There is no  fixed e7 price rate - some MSErs posted were paying 6p, some 18p in last 3 months for off peak.

Pay by bill rather than DD - that can be a 10% premium at EPG discount rates on SR - E7 etc ??

£270 It's not a comfortable number, but nor is it unbelievable.

There are things that can be done - some cheap to conserve energy in future etc  film on windows, draft excluders if communal halls unhet and drafty doors etc - but without knowing more.....

Try to get usage and rates - and see if owner ould be willing to swap supplier.

Then try a few quotes, or see likes Octopus or  edf tariff tables - in the rate cards thread here in the forum.

SP do not have a good rep, but some remain loyal thinking  it's the old national S Power - when in reality its now just  another foreign (Spanish - 100% since 06)  supplier.

What tariff meter arrangement- do they know - 1 meter, 2 meter etc - it can change ease of moving.

E7 unlike single rate - has seen swapping for price in recent months.

thanks for the input, i think i am going to dig a little further with this to check it is OK, and ask similar houses, neighbours as they are all i think on the same heaters

It can be very difficult to compare what are apparently similar properties - different number of people, life styles, at home/at work, some are prepared to shiver/others like it cosey ....................
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

2 night storage heaters charging for up to 7 hours a night, say 2kW each (you can presumably look up the power) x 30 days = 840kWh a month
Average night rates on E7 = 18p  so about £150
So - which of my numbers in bold are wrong for that property?  Where is the rest going?  Water heating?

But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Seems crazy. Detached bungalow, no cavity wall insulation and I have 4 storage heaters 3.4KW, 2.2KW, 1.7KW, 1.2KW in use on various settings throughout the year (living room 18C and others 14-16C) and my off peak usage amounts to around 7500KWh and 1250KWh during the day. using prices from 1st April that works out at £160/month.

The DD could simply be to high for the actual usage.
