    Q. What 'should' Chris have done when asked if the position was 'ok'? Should they have brought out a tape measure and asked the guy 'to hold one end, ta much, so I can check whether you are competent'? Should they have said 'hang on until I reposition the bed and all the furniture to check it's all central'
    How many Chrises are there?
Just one. I think "they" has been used in an attempt not to mis-gender the OP who could be Christopher or Christine.

Thanks, FFH. Yes, tho' I was aware at the time of how it confused what I was trying to say.
What's the best non-gender pronoun to use?

Or a Christian, Christina, Christie  or just plain old Chris.

I'm trying to recall a time when you haven't agreed with an OP.
Only when I feel it's right. Honestly.

No solicitor is going to take on a £400 dispute on either side of the argument.  They'd have to stop work after spending the winnings in about an hour and a half.

Life's too short to bother about a few inches, let alone start a legal case over it or even write a long post about it.
Fair enough. So, this company is not going to pursue Chris for their mistake?

This company did get it wrong, both with their measuring error and their follow-up. Baaaaad company.

Him or Her will do fine for anyone, all this woke stuff is alien to me.

Is the centre of the room ambiguous in any way or is it square?

I agree with the OP and TIW. If you've specified that they centre it, and they haven't done this, that's their problem and I'd keep the £400 as compensation for a job poorly done. I cannot imagine why you should have to get the tape measure out to check it whilst they are in progress as you were within your rights to assume they'd centre it from the previous instruction and this wouldn't be obvious as you say until you put all the furniture back.

I would surmise that they are highly unlikely to take it to court and even if they did, I'd fancy your chances.

They don’t have to take you to court, they can just pass the debt onto a collection agency, and accept a percentage loss.

And what happens if you don’t pay the debt collection agency? They potentially have to initiate court proceedings do they not, to try and retrieve the money?

They will harass you endlessly, it’s part of the game for them. They will buy debts knowing that 80%(rough figure) will payoff and prepared to walk away from the rest.

    Indeed.

Personally I wouldn’t bat an eyelid until someone served me court papers but appreciate might cause some worry for those less familiar with the process.
