M&S policy on giving change when using gift vouchers

Why not just give any change under a pound back in money like they used to do? What a complete waste of plastic.
Just see it from M+S's point of view, they will be guaranteed to keep all money from the giftcards, all these tansactions under £1 will run into hundreds of thousands of pounds which M+S will loose out on, now they can keep it all.0 -

I get that but........
They'll also be guaranteed to completely exasperate thousands of customers with stupid bits of plastic with just pence on them. Surely any idiot at M&S (even those who work in marketing) can see that this is not a good move.
It's the little stuff like this that actually matters to customers. Turning a shopping experience into a stressful experience is one of the worst things a store could ever do. Once someone decides to stop spending their money in a particular shop (for whatever reason), it can be an almost impossible mission to try and tempt them to change their minds."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
The reason behind this is as said it keeps all the money within the company.as if they gave money as change it could go else where, paper vouchers are still avaliable but they are trying to phase these out, the gift cards do have a life span of 2 years if not used, but in m&s use is termed as any transaction including finding out how much is on the card.0

A bit greedy - afterall the vouchers weren't bought at a discount - so they don't really have any right to complain about it, and it's not as if they are losing out. In fact, i'd have thought this would make people less inclined to purchase gift vouchers from them anyway - so only going to end up costing them money.0 -
Most large companies have gone onto gift cards now, M&S are one of the last so I think they were just following suit.0

It's not the gift cards that are the problem.
It's giving a customer a gift card with 2p on it as change for a paper £20 voucher"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."

Yep - same happened to OH last week. 50p change on a giftcard, when am I going to spend that then?
I give up with these companies - they claim to be green or responsible and then they come up with these new policies!

is this a new thing as i've never had a problem getting credit voucher (til receipt credit :P) before.

Elliesmum, there are loads of items that will be in the sale for 50p after Xmas, there always is, especially on Homeware or Foods.
Crispeater, was the necklace on its own or was it a set with earrings for pierced ears? Thats the only reason I can think of why they wouldn't take it back.0 -
If you want to buy a gift voucher, then you can insist on a paper one, but only from non-food tills. If you purchase a gift voucher from a food till it has to be a gift card, as before these started you couldn't buy any vouchers from the food bit.
As for the other posters who received cash as their change, the till drawer opens most of the time, so the assistant serving you gave you that in error. Around xmas time there are so many new staff, they are all thrown in at the deep end.
The change going on to the gift card has nothing to do with the SA. The till won't let you go any further until you swipe a card, so don't blame us0
