Problems with moving from BT to Sky

My father who's 94 is currently paying nearly £100 per month to BT plus £57 a month to sky. Over the weekend we managed to get a really good deal with Sky but that was after we'd agreed a new deal with BT. BT said we had 14 days to change our minds so didn't think it would be a problem. So, we get a call from Sky today saying that as our account had now been cancelled with BT, they can't take over the phone line. What can we do? My father doesn't want a new number - he's had that number for over 40 years and to change it would be a nightmare for him. BT say it's been cancelled. Does anyone have some advice? Thanks.

Thanks.Um, I don't quite follow. If you've arranged a new deal and then cancelled that under your cooling off period then then doing that should put you back on the previous arrangement. This shouldn't prevent anybody else taking over the line as you haven't (or shouldn't have) cancelled the broadband itself - that's 30 day notice anyway and only used if you don't want broadband on that line in the future, I presume its the same for phone line on its own.
