Yes, you can save it to return to. You work through it in short sections, it's not a big daunting form in one big lump. I assume as it asks you questions, it then sends you to the next appropriate section depending on your answer - you don't see loads of irrelevant stuff that you have to skip.
But from memory, I think it also tells you in advance what you'll need to hand in order to do the form, so if you get it together first, it doesn't actually take long. It also gives you a check your answers page at the end to go through to ensure you've not made typos etc. The one I did recently was a very simple estate and I had the information to hand already and did it in one session. In fact, it seemed so quick and easy I thought I'd done it wrong or missed something. We'll find out if/when I get it approved, or not!0 -
We recently did the whole things ourselves, and I wrote a thread in case it is useful. You can find it here - good luck with it!1

I found printing off the paper form very useful. I could fill in all the required fields as I got them and change if needed. I then transcribed this to the online form. I don't know if the layout of the forms has changed but when I applied the paper and online forms were in different orders. Both required exactly the same information.1
