He could still have swapped out the electricity meter for a smart meter though...
Indeed. Last time, he was instructed by his office not to do so. This time, he didn't even ask them.

If you are moving home why do you want all this hassle, just leave it for next owner to deal with.

I raise an eyebrow when people try to justify a situation in which an energy supplier is sending operatives out to do work on equipment they aren't trained to work on, apparently because the 'system' doesn't know what equipment has been installed, and that is somehow regarded as normal.  To do the same a second time doesn't strike me as having a well managed system in place.
And there you have Scottish Power in a nutshell!  an organisation whose own operatives admit that different departments can't/won't communicate with each other

I rebooked the smart meter installation for this morning, and the same chap turned up.

"Last time I was here I updated your details to show that you have a U16 meter, but the database is still showing a U6 meter.  I'm not authorised to work on U16, and I don't carry the parts. Bye."

Totally incompetent to send the same engineer that previously reported he isn't authorised to work on the job. Even if they can't know what meter everyone has in advance, the fact they previously sent someone out who reported he couldn't do the job and they send the same person again, smacks of bad planning or total incompetence.

There’s a sort of fascination with how bad they are.

    I'm with you on that!
I know an 80 year old man who lives in a flat (where he's lived for the last 50 years) and his meters are in a tiny cubby hole, serving 4 flats, on the floor below him. Last year, his supplier, Eon Next, said they'd install smart meters. He agreed as it is getting very difficult for him to read the meters (he has to lie on the cold concrete floor with a torch to see them). I'd told him the IHD almost certainly would not work, but if there was a signal for the data to be transmitted, at least he wouldn't have to read them any longer.
Engineer came and said there wasn't enough room to install the meters, so did nothing.
Recently Eon Next callled him again saying they should install smart meters. He told them to read his account notes, as they'd already tried once. They wouldn't have any of it and in frustration he said fine, go ahead. They're "installing" them next month...

It really is a case of the right hand having no clue what the left hand is doing.

Hang on: isn't this a case where the physical meter type varies from the type recorded on the database? So the engineer was competently able to change it, but because 'officially' it was logged as a different type, he'd have been breaking the rules to do so? Which was why he requested that they update it on the database at the point of the first visit.
    Or have I misunderstood?

could be but assuming the op remembers the conversation right then:

"I'm not authorised to work on U16, and I don't carry the parts."

seems quite clear its a practical/training problem with that person not a data entry problem.

i'd think the problem with it being a differnt model on the system is that if it was the u16 in the paperwork they would of sent someone else/with the right part.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

  • Worth a read:

    https://www.energylivenews.com/2022/10/13/uks-first-u16-gas-smart-meter-installed/

Did the installer not have a U16 smart meter to fit or the parts needed to allow him to fit a standard domestic smart gas meter to the existing U16 meter supply?
