Why did Intelligent Octopus stopped charging Tesla EV?

After having my Myenergi Zappi EV charger fitted yesterday, I plugged the Zappi charger to my Tesla EV for the first time at around 10:30am. The EV immediately starting charging as the Octopus schedule showing off-peak was available from 10:30am to 4.00pm (see image).

However, after about an hour of charging, the Zappi stopped charging the EV but the EV was only about 70% charged. The Zappi was showing that charging was complete. Why did Intelligent Octopus (IO) stop charging the EV when the EV had not reached 100% and the charge limit was set to 100% ?

If I want the EV to be 100% charged during the night time tariff period of 2330 - 0530, should I set the ‘Ready by time’ to 05:30 ?

When I had the Zappi charger plugged into my EV during the day on Saturday, and IO showed Smart Charging schedule to be 10:30am - 4:00pm (as per image below), does this mean my house usage cost was at the low rate tariff of 10p kWh?

If I unplug the Zappi charger from the EV during this Smart Charging schedule period of 10:30am - 4:00pm, does this mean my house usage cost is no longer at the low rate tariff of 10p kWh?

I have a Tesla and use a Zappi charger.

I set the charge limit from the car, either on the screen or from the app.

What is the charge limit of the care set to?

That may be why it stopped charging as the car may have been set to only charge to around 70%

Thanks @matt_drummer. Would you mind showing me where on the Tesla app where you set the charge limit? My understanding is that with Intelligent Octopus, their app sets the charge limit.

Right now, I have plugged my Zappi charger into the Tesla. Intelligent Octopus has started charging the Tesla and is provided off-peak rate now. The Intelligent Octopus app image is showing 100% charge limit and the Tesla app is showing Charge Limit of 100%

Have you told octopus you're charging on a 3 pin plug, but your actually charging on a home charger. Finding it hard to judge though as you've got it in miles and I only use percentages

That is where I set my charge limit, where the picture of the car is.

That is obviously not the problem.

I was guessing, I don't use anything other than the Zappi and my car, I charge at work and we don't care what it costs :)

The only other thing I know is that sometimes the Zappi is not that reliable and will just stop charging.

It doesn't really happen to me very often but sometimes with my boss's Jaguar PHEV.

The Zappi isn't actually a charger, the charger is in the car, the Zappi is just a power supply.

I'm not sure that they are that great, we have two at work and it needed seven of them to find two good ones!

Just my experience and  other people may have different views, I also don't know what other chargers are like.

I would imagine that combining charging times and limits with an electricity tariff might go wrong from time to time.

I find that some of these things need monitoring at first to find problems and gain confidence that they are going to do what you want reliably.

I'm sorry that I cannot assist you further.

Set both to 90% and then back.  If you don't need all the range its still better to charge 30-80% i believe.

You say that you only yesterday had the Zappi fitted. If so, what did you indicate as a charger when you signed up to Intelligent and did the charge test?

If you indicated a granny lead or similar, disconnect your car in the Octopus app and re-connect it again (do the test charge again), but this time indicate that your charger is Zappi (7.4kw). This should then solve the problem.

Edit: just noticed @pcgtron post above, that's my suspicion too  )

thanks @markin. I have the Tesla RWD which has the battery where it is fine to be charged up to 100%. When I next plug in the Zappi to the Tesla, I will set the Charge limit on both, the Tesla app and the Octopus app to 90% and then back to 100%. Do I do this when the Tesla is being charged?

thanks @_Sam_. Yes, I had the Zappi fitted on Saturday. When I signed up for IO earlier in the week, I am pretty certain I selected the Zappi as I knew the Zappi was going to be fitted in a couple of days. However, when I did the charge test, I used the Tesla supplied granny lead (assuming the granny lead is the 3-pin plug lead supplied by Tesla). I will try what 'markin' suggested first but if this does not solve the issue, do I disconnect the Tesla car from the Octopus app by selecting 'Disconnect device' as shown in the attached image and then selecting 'Reconnect device' ?

How do I get the Octopus app to do another test charge? Do I do this test outside of the off-peak schedule or does it not matter?

Also, on the attached image, should the radio button be enabled, i.e. leaving it in its current position?
  • I believe that if you disable smart charging, you can still avail yourself of cheap charging within the IO rules.

Don’t disable the smart charging, you will lose extra hours Octopus gives you at off peak rate in addition to the night time hours.

When you disconnect your car in the app, the option will appear to connect a car, so you’ll choose that and it will ask you the set of questions such as what is the car and what is the charger, and the it will tell you to plug in to do a charge test, doesn’t matter peak or off peak.
