Hi
I want to buy a particular 78 plate (they arent out yet). Is it possible to register an interest with the DVLA, or how do I ho about getting a personalised plate.

The "73" plates will be released in May, apparently, ahead of being on the road from September:
https://www.nationalnumbers.co.uk/blog/2023/02/73-number-plate-release-information.html#:~:text=When is the 73 number,to motorists around the country.

I can only imagine that the "78" plate you desire will be released in May 2028 so it can be on the road from September 2028.

Remember, you are not able to put a plate on an older car where the plate is "newer" than the car:
    https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/buy.html?plate=AA23 ABC&price=399

So, as well as planning for the plate to become available, you will also need to plan for a new car from September 2028.  The alternative would be to put the plate on retention (up to 10 years, I think) and then transfer to a car once you have a car that is new enough.

Is whoever the gift of the private plate for have a brand new car in 2024 that the plate can be fixed to?  Is the car part of the gift?

I can imagine things could be awkward (for giver and receiver) if a plate on retention is gifted but the receiver has no intention (or possibility) of having the brand new car that can make use of the plate.

Hi Grumpy chap. Owner is having a new car this year and it will be a gift they have hinted they would like.

    The DVLA say you cannot
    • use a private number that makes a vehicle look newer than it is - for example, an ‘07’ registration number on a 2003 registered vehicle
So a 74 plate on a vehicle purchased this year will not be possible.

A new car this year and a "74" plate next year won't work.

The individual needs to wait to get the new car next year when they can also apply the plate.

A 74 plate will only be possible on a new car registered from 1 September 2024.

To be clear, the new car has to be registered on or after 1st Sept 2024.
