Cost to cap gas supply

Hello.

We recently requested that our energy provider (Octopus) disconnect our gas supply - we are no longer using it, following a broken boiler and an xpensive switch to cleaner alternatives.

We have been quoted £1300 to stop using gas, we only need them to cap it, and this seems extortionate.

Any advice, much appreciated.

Gas supply pipes get removed about a year later by Cadent etc, again free of charge as long as you do not contact them asking them to do the work.

It depends on the area as it will come down to costs by that regions gas network. In general they will cap a supply for free, leaving thr meter locked but in place with the supply pipe out of the meter sealed, but sometimes they charge for removal of the meter and pipes onto the property.
  • What reason have they given for such a high quote? Supposedly, Octopus will currently disconnect a gas supply free of charge to the consumer, so it sounds like there may be something a bit more complex going on for your specific situation.

Octopus have probably given incorrect answer to the customer.

    Looks free

    With the caveat

Important note: in the majority of cases the removal of the meter is fairly simple. However, sometimes there may be other works involved in capping the supply that will require the network to make alterations to your supply. In those cases we do not cover the additional costs incurred by that third party, but the work we do to remove and cap the meter will still be covered for free.

Octopus will currently cover the cost for disconnecting the meter, other suppliers charge in the region of £70 for this.

    But Octopus also states

The problem arises when at a later stage the pipes are removed, Cadent is quoting here 1315 to 1793 (London) for the standard domestic pipe size.

The screenshot you posted seems to be from Octopus. I am not sure how they can state that Cadent will not charge for it as the Cadent web site shows the £1314 for removing the pipes.

From when is this screenshot as the OP clearly is quoted the Cadent disconnection cost here?

Screenshot is Cadent, this has been covered many times, suppliers BG and Octopus will remove meter and cap free of charge, Cadent will remove gas pipes for free as long as they are not asked to do so.

I challenge you to produce evidence of someone actually having been charged for having gas supply pipes removed who did not ask for it to be done, I have produced Cadent evidence as per screenshot.

They won’t remove the actual pipe but isolate the service. This *should* be done within 12 months under GSMR but in reality can be a lot longer. Depends on information from Xoserve.
    But it is free.

"Gas meter removed by BG in Dec 2020. Cadent literally removed gas pipe on Monday last week. (Had a few phone calls 3 months ago from them in warm up to it). Paid nothing"
