@p00hsticks Since me and the other executor are not direct descendants of the deceased, the solicitor advised we have to submit a paper application. I certainly would have preferred an online application going by the paper timelines :(

That sounds odd - I've never heard that before - if you're named executor in the will, then that's your authority to apply for Probate.  The one I've just done, I was niece to the deceased - but I was acting as executor, not a family member.
  • Anyone have experience of time taken to correct a spelling error in a Probate certificate? Was granted probate over a month ago but they made a spelling mistake in my co-administrator's name.

Also anyone know about recompense I can seek due to this error? Probate Registry refuse to deal with me directly as I have a solicitor. However this error is increasing my legal costs plus it's meaning I lose money as I can't proceed with estate administration and distribution.

Is this a response to my post?

I have legal cover as of around March 2022. I started Probate September 2022 and it was granted in May 2023 but my husband died in November 2021.

Could my legal cover help me do you think?

You should be able to talk to a solicitor for free and ask about your rights to recompense due to the spelling error.

I feel so depressed... I'm so skint after having paid for cremation and a small gathering  in May. Each day is the same it's so boring.... why is life so stressful?

I'm 10 weeks in and I agree its a tremendously stressful experience. I heard of someone who emailed their MP and got a result two weeks later. Coincidence or not it might make you feel better.

The system is a complete farce, yet if there's a sniff of Inheritance tax they are bang on it.
  • Just to give you an idea of the Hell. Started the process in Feb 23 by informing the Tax office including ringing them for advice. The application was for my late Mother, no property and amount under £70,000 so WELL below Inertance tax, so after filling the forms for the Tax office on line I started the Probate process ONE month later Mid March 23. to cut a long story short first the Tax office sent a refund of Tax and I kept the Probate office informed all along the way, but they had not received the correct forms back from the Tax office, so after backwards and forwards emails I finally wrote a letter to the Tax office IHT department which they took TWO months to reply to, meanwhile my 'Case worker' at the probate office (Whom informed me the days they took emails, as they were working from home!) was hassling for answers I could not supply.

Anyway at the end of that two months I finally got a letter from the tax office now saying My late Mother owed them £142. By this time you get to a stage where you just feel like saying F it but I had to consider my sister the only other person named in the will, I scanned and sent everything to the case worker and we finally got probate in December 23 and the Banks transferred all the money and closed the accounts just before Christmas. The process is Hell and as you can no longer pop along to your local Probate office (Thanks Tories) you are dealing with IMO inexperienced government staff that might help between their life at home as where most work from. So Mid Feb to just before Christmas 23. Good luck I feel for you all.
