Severn Trent New Water Meter Threat

in Water bills
Hi
Until the weekend I had a water meter located inside my home. Every six months I would take a reading and send it to Severn Trent Water via my online account and pay the bill. I have never missed or provided a late payment.
Last month I received a threatening letter from Severn Trent informing me that if I did not allow an engineer access to my home to fit a new water meter (one that sends automatic readings) then I would be transferred to the estimated water usage system of billing. Considering that there are only two people living in the house this would mean me having to pay more than double what I pay now. With this in mind I agreed to a new meter.
The old meter was removed and a new one installed. The new meter has no readout whatsoever and this now means that I can no longer monitor my water usage or query any bills that may seem too high. I contacted Severn Trent by phone and was basically told tough luck and 'If I have a complaint can go to OFWAT.
I now feel that Severn Trent I have bullied me into having this meter installed and are now refusing to do anything about it.
Does anyone have a similar experience of this issue?

Does your meter not have a lift up flap ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill2 -
Solved! Many thanks. The meter is fitted inside a kitchen cupboard and is hard to get to. Looked at your suggestion and couldn't make out any flap at first but then realised I could rotate the cover. Doing this revealed the previously hidden readout.
I'm still not happy at the bullying letter though!
