Windscreen liquid alternatives?

Hi

Does anybody know about cheap windscreen liquid alternatives?

At the mo we are using a mixture of distilled water and screen wash (5 to 1, or so).

Distilled water is about £5 for 5L, and screen wash is about £4 for 1L.

Do you think I can do it cheaper?

Thank you.

SoS it just depends how cold it gets so how much freezing it must withstand! Otherwise you could thin it down even more or use just water. It reminds me of when I lived in Moscow in the early '90s where you couldn't buy screenwash, so everyone used water mixed with a little vodka (seriously!). Even worse, the traffic police would sometimes stop you and check various things on your car...... and it happened that they actually tasted your windscreen liquid!

    Hi SoScrooge,

    These older threads might help:

You may get more help with this on the Motoring & Public Transport board, let me know if you want me to move your thread across.

  • You have to be careful of so-called alternatives - they may have inappropriate ingredients for use on car paintwork, for example. Over a year ago, I got a big 5 litre bottle of CarPlan Four Seasons additive for just £1.99 (RRP £3.99) at Woolworth. I use a 10% solution in tap, not distilled, water. The manufacturer says 25% in summer, 50% in winter and neat in severe winter conditions, but they would say that, wouldn't they? Its still a little over half full and I do use my washers a lot.

  • I never use de-ionised water - I find water that's been filtered, boiled and cooled does just fine. Plus whatever screenwash IO can find that doesn't smell like vomit.

If you have a dehumidifier that gives off distilled water as a by product

I just use normal water and a weak mixture of car plus screen wash about 10-1.

I just started using Wilkos already mixed scree wash and find that okay

Yes, just use normal tap water and cheap screenwash from poundland or the supermarket. In the summer you can get away with just using water but in winter you need the antifreeze properties of the screenwash. You can still diluting down a bit more than what they recommend though.

I normally pour a bucket of WARM (not boiling) water from the tap on my windscreen in the morning to defrost them and this gives them a good clean.
  • I just top mine up with ordinary water and a drop of Stardrops.
Never had any problems with it and it cleans the windows a treat.

ohhh I was debating this but then decided against it incase i ended up not being able to see out because the windscreen had frothed lol. I'm glad you said it's ok & i might just nip out & put a drop of stardrops in mine :)

We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.
