I suppose this is one for the "disguised own brands" hunt...

I have just finished a pack of Piriteze (Cetirizine Dihydrochloride) which I had kicking around from last summer (normally I'm not affected too badly by hayfever but the last week or two it started getting bad!)...anyway, on the recommendation of an earlier poster I just bought Tesco's own brand version, £3.49 for 30 tablets, BOGOF i.e. 60 tabs for £3.49 (30 tab packs only available over-the-counter at the pharmacy). What's more, if you inspect the packaging they are manufactured by exactly the same company as Piriteze! (I think Piriteze sells for about £4 for 7 or £10 for 30 tabs!)

I'm kinda surprised Martin reckoned Boots £8 was a good for a mainstream chain, since Tesco is rather mainstream...

After trying to get me to buy horrendously expensive packs of Clarityn the nice lady at Tesco pharmacy was finally persuaded to venture into the back and find me packs of 30 Loratadine (made by APS) which were under £2 a pack (£1.97 or thereabouts).

I read this and other similar threads a few days ago and don't remember seeing anything cheaper ?

After a search around my local town centre, I found the cheapest place for Loratadine (Clarityn) was Wilkinsons/Tescos both were 99p and 97p for 7 which isnt as good as the above poster :( Boots wanted an astonishing £2.69 for 7 although these were on the bogof offer (if you can call it that!) making them £1.34 for 7 :O

The packs of 7 will never be the cheapest. Both Loratadine and Cetirizine are available off-the-shelf in packs of 7, or over-the-counter in packs of 30. So if you want the cheaper (per unit) packs, you need to buy them from a pharmacy, although a prescription is not required.

Tesco's £3.49 BOGOF for Cetirizine (30+30 free) works out slightly cheaper than their £1.97 or whatever for 30 Loratadine, although they seem to be just about the cheapest for either. So get yourself to a Tesco with a pharmacy.

I've been able to follow this thread because I can read it online anytime of the day or night I choose, but shopping in Tesco for me is different matter!

I never had the chance to get to a Tesco pharmacy during opening hours before my Loratadine (leftover from last year) ran out. So, Sunday morning before work I had no choice but to stop off at the local 7 day pharmacy. I got totally ripped off. All their hayfever products were behind the counter. Despite asking for their cheapest generic brand ("Care", Cetirizine), I had to pay £3.54 for 7!!!

If I can get to a Tesco pharmacy before the BOGOF ends I'm buying at least 2 years worth!

I haven't been able to get to Tesco wither, but my mum picked some up in Wilkinsons yesterday (having scouted out Boots, Superdrug, Adsa and a couple of chemists first - she is a primo moneysaver!) and they were £1.49 per pack of 7 (Loretadine once a day jobs) BUT they were on BOGOF, so £1.49 for 14,which Ithought was not too bad a price!

Anyone got any views on the difference in Clarityn & Zirtec in terms of effectiveness?

This might not be the answer you want, but I think it will be really difficult to say.

What is probably true is that these drugs will be safe when used in accordance with the instructions. They would not be on open-shelf access.

Different people will experience different levels of success with the two drugs depending on their symptoms. Cetirizine + nasal spray + eye drops work for me. Other people prefer loratadine. For some unlucky people, neither touch the symptoms, and they need further medical intervention.

The best advice is to ask your GP which they recommend. Failing that, ask a pharmacist.
