My husband is a hayfever sufferer. A couple of years ago we purchased 3for2 in Boots on Zirton (spelling?). We assumed all hayfever medicine was the same. After a week or so of taking the medicine he found himself very depressed. It wasn't until speaking with a good friend about hayfever in general that we found out the friend had at one stage been nearly suicidal while taking Zirton; changed brand and then was fine.
We went back to Boots with reciept for an exchange under their customer satisfaction policy and had a real hard time getting an exchange but I managed it in the end. (I used to work there so knew which 'buttons' to press). He swapped to Boots brand and they have been fine.

    The moral of the story:

Don't buy a new medicine in bulk until you know it agrees with you. (Appologies if I'm stating the obvious).

Just to clear up a few brand name confusions...

Cetirizine (hydrochloride) = Zirtek = Benadryl one-a-day = Piriteze (not to be confused with Piriton, which is an older medicine which can cause drowsiness)

Loratadine = Clarityn. Boots own label stuff tends to be this as well.

These tend to be the most used active ingredients but you might see ACRIVASTINE too.

All of these usually have little sedating effects.

Have seen Galpharm Cetirizine in Lidl very cheap - can't remember exact price though. Will look it up.

Apologies if this is a repeat of above, but for all but the most short-lived symptoms get the treatments from the GP for the best value. Consider 3 month or 12 month pre-payment certificates if you have to pay.

Galpharm I find to be the most effective, and yes, and £1 for 7 in Superdrug, it's great! They work best for me!

I know someone who studies pharmacology (or something - the way you become a pharmacist ;)). The best product, according to latest studies, are tablets called xyzal. Only thing is I haven't been able to find any! If anyone sees any around could you post here where you saw them; I'm desperate to try them!

Xyzal is a proprietary name. The generic name is 'levocetirizine dihydrochloride'. It is currently still a POM - Prescription Only Medicine so you can't get it unless you have a prescription from your doctor.

Xyzal has comparable action as cetirizine but at half the dose. i.e. 5mg of Xyzal will give roughly the same effect as 10mg cetirizine.

To become a pharmacist you study pharmacy.

I get Xyzal on prescription and have used this for 2 years now. It's superb for hayfever. The nice doctor prescribes 56 tablets at a time, which at £6.50 for the prescription is a good price.

    Superhoop,

What is the difference between Cetirizine and Loratadine. I use Benadryl which seem to be the most effective for me but when I take Clarityn they seem to take longer to work. Is Cetirizine stronger?
