Yesterday I cancelled my BT landline and it will disconnect in 30 days time on 11th April.
Yesterday afternoon I received the following email from Sky, it looks genuine and uses my Christian name saying my Sky broadband service will stop on 11th April.
Obviously I am worried sick about this but don't want to phone that number in the email. Could it possibly be genuine could BT have done this?

This is from the email:

It's a shame you've asked us to remove Sky Broadband from your Sky products and services.

But it's not too late to change your mind. To chat about your options, or to discover lots of reasons to keep your Sky Broadband, just give us a call on 03303 323 033.

  • I'd call Sky to make sure but I'd guess yes, the phone number is likely linked to the bb service so cancelling it also cancels the broadband but I'd call Sky & check.

Your Sky broadband service is supplied over the Openreach landline previously rented thru BT ! So yes ,you ARE going to lose your broadband UNLESS you make arrangements to reinstate your line rental - do it sooner rather than later because BT have form in disconnecting you early !!

If your broadband is provided over the copper phone line then all the above is correct.

There are no providers that offer broadband without line rental on the copper lines so you must have both although you do not need to connect a handset at all.

You must be on a very old package if you have such a split service and will probably be overpaying considerably as compared to having both from the same company.

You need to take action immediately to ensure you are not disconnected.

Sky haven’t ‘sold’ the broadband product that was  ‘line share’  broadband , for years , that’s where you paid BT for ‘line rental’ and paid Sky just for broadband service , it’s probably more than 10 years since Sky actively tried to persuade its customers on this type of broadband ( called ‘SMPF’ , shared metallic path facility’  ) to switch entirely to Sky for telephony as well as broadband , those that consented to Sky doing this , stopped getting two bills , one from  BT , for line rental and one for Sky broadband , ( they stopped paying BT completely ) and paid a bigger sum to Sky to cover the Sky line rental , although the total Sky bill may have been a little less than the combined bills from BT and Sky …..perhaps you were someone  that refused to swap your line rental to Sky, and continued to pay two bills.

If you had BT and Sky on the same line , presumably this SMPF legacy arrangement must be the case and if you have arbitrarily called BT and told then to cancel your landline , then obviously Sky SMPF broadband cannot exist on its own, so  it’s inevitable that the Sky broadband service sharing the line will also cease.
FWIW , there will hardly be anyone these days on line share , the overwhelming majority pay a single provider for broadband including line rental , do you recall ever being asked by Sky to move your line rental to them ?.

TBH , BT have done nothing wrong, you asked BT  to cease your ‘line’ , BT do this and it informs Openreach , who then advise the SMPF broadband provider ( Sky in your case ) that their broadband will also have to be ceased , as it will no longer have a ‘line’ to host it.

Even if you contact Sky , chances are BT have already set in motion what you asked them to do, and both your services will cease ( that’s what you asked for ) , the only real way it could be prevented would be by contacting BT and ask to cancel your instruction to them to cease your BT line , obviously if they can do this , you would remain a BT customer for line rental , but frankly I think it’s probably already too late
