Ok so you can (or must?) do this too but normally it says you can if you wish, or words to that effect?
Defendant do file at court ... an amended defence by 20 March
You didn't answer this. It was a question.

    Apologies - both letters state:

    No, that's not the bit.
I've just re-read both letters and I can't see any text that suggests any element of them are optional.

Happy to send you redacted copies if you can let me know the best method

OK so you must do both things, even if you don't want to amend your defence! ...do you?

What should I assume from this, that there was something wrong with my original defence or that I just have the opportunity to, if I want to?

It's allowing you the option to change/add to/edit your Defence if, in light of the fuller Particulars of Claim, there is more emerging that you had previously not covered in your initial Defence.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

    Thanks, that's helpful.

Today's numpty question - how does the Witness Statement and Defence differ?

Looking at the example Witness Statements I was originally directed to, these are very comprehensive both in terms of the specific circumstances and the relevent points of law. What in addition should the defence cover?
