So I was browsing the Barclays account offering and noticed that Premier eligibility criteria seem to have changed. One can now open a Premier account irrespective of wealth – if one doesn’t meet the criteria in terms of income/assets they just get charged £20 a month. I asked chat who also confirmed the same.

What do people think? I don’t see what it offers that’s worth £20 a month. Be interesting if they’ll slowly revamp the offering.

    Taken from Barclays web page

Pay in a gross annual income of at least £75,000

    or

Have a total balance of at least £100,000 in savings with us, in Barclays UK investments – or in a mix of both

If your payments or balances drop below what you need to stay with Premier, we’ll let you know

They’re slowly updating their criteria with an ultimate goal of rolling it out to everyone if they pay £20. Looks like the front end in the app is ready but the website and application flow aren’t quite there yet. It’s coming though

I believe they ask you for your salary details. Most Premier offering rely on salary payments matching the declaration rather than just movement of funds.
They will also verify your salary with national hunter, so if you're going to start inflating your salary anywhere you need to be consistent...

I upgraded. Told them my true salary (less than £75k) and they let me. Haven’t said anything about a monthly fee. Assume that’ll come in 12 months time. I think I have paid in over £40k in the past 12 months though.

It is in the T&C, do not need to tell you separately.. as per thread title, now they let everyone upgrade but if they do not meet the Paying required (they assume that £3300 per month or £40k per year is the minimum someone on £75 gross should pay in at net of tax saving scheme like salary sacrifice and pension contribution).

Indeed most Premier offering (e.g. NatWest/RBS and HSBC in my experience) as to verify real income, with the latest update Barclays clearly will not
  • The account may be much easier to get than before but the black premier visa debit card is no longer automatic in all cases. You have to call them to apply for it if they don’t send it out when you upgrade to premier.

They won't replace your debit card automatically until your current one expires. If you request a new one, it'll be a black one automatically (AIUI).
  • Not for everyone unfortunately. I have replaced my debit card several times and have never been sent a black one

    Hi

Years ago when we worked we went into the bank to merge our current accounts as we were considering leaving work early retirments around 50-ish - so got it free. About a year ago or so cant exactly recall we got emails and letters re the 20 quid as our incone is below that as we left work a few months after geting the PB account - the only advatage we have sued is they aret times answer the phone quicker and said no to the 20 quid but we keep the PB memebship until the cards expier in late 2026

I like the card with Premier banking and the darker colour, lol.
