I put my card in the machine to pay. After entering the PIN it came up on the machine as declined ... I got a member of staff to remove an item to take it under £100 so I could use contactless on my phone,
My understanding is that (strange as it sounds) the limit when using contact-less on your phone is much higher than when using the physical card with a PIN - although maybe different banks have different limits?
Certainly at the supermarket last week I was mildly surprised at how easy it was to spend £220 just by tapping my phone on the reader.
Whilst payments using a phone communicate with the terminal using the wireless protocol they are actually classed as "customer device verified". The contactless limit does not apply because the device provides the verification of the user either biometrically or via a PIN. In theory the only limit on the payment amount of a Google Wallet or Apple Pay is the card's limit and the terminal providers transaction limit which would apply for a chip and PIN transaction as well.

It's very clear on the screen as it happened to me last week. Shop was for over £100 so I put my card in the machine to pay. After entering the PIN it came up on the machine as declined and on the main screen 'There was an issue with your payment card, please try again or contact a member of staff'. I tried a further 2 times with the same issue. In the end, I got a member of staff to remove an item to take it under £100 so I could use contactless on my phone, then purchase the other item seperately.
After speaking to First Direct, appeared somehow Chip&PIN had been disabled on my card.
Why is your phone limited to £100?

As to the OP... whats the issue? They didnt have you arrested or anything. Sounds more like they said you left without paying, which turns out to be true, rather than calling you a thief (which implies intent)

Almost the same thing happened to me on Tuesday, local coop said my payment the day before hadnt gone through, I'd left and though they'd run after me they hadnt been able to catch me. 2 second check on my phone showed there wasnt a transaction from the day before and so just paid the £1.50 I owed and joked with the shop manager that technically it was my second time ever shoplifting.

Didnt have an issue being asked to pay what I owed and certainly wasnt thinking of asking for compensation for it!

If they explicitly called you a thief, rather than just saying you left without paying, then technically this may be considered slander. Unlike libel but inline with other torts, you have to prove what financial loss you have suffered (with libel you are entitled to compensation even if there are no financial losses)

Apparently it's not thanks to the helpful posts on here pointing it out! I just had the £100 contactless figure in my head. Can't seem to find out what the limit is though for Samsung Pay which uses Curve, as varying amounts mentioned online.

Edit - Scrub that, just found this on the Samsung Pay website - For mobile payments with pin or fingerprint authentication, there is no limit.

I'd expect it to be because ApplePay is unlimited too.

Some merchants may have their system poorly setup to not differentiate between types of contactless but you see it less and less as ApplePay etc has been round long enough for companies to have updated their equipment

I've never had a payment at self checkout declined, so I'd be interested to know from those of you who have exactly what company it was and what visual/audible prompt there was to let you know about it.
Of course, it could be that I have had a payment declined and it's simply not obvious when that happens with machines at my local Sainaldlidlaitrosesco.

It usually says payment accepted and then prints a receipt. Some now ask if you want a receipt.

I think it happened to me once quite a while back when (from memory) I inadvertently tried to use an expired card.
    As I recall it....
On the main self-checkout screen I had pressed 'finish & pay', selected 'pay by card / contactless'   and was told to follow the instructions on the card reader.  Having presented the card as instructed I got the 'declined' message on the card reader, and then a message on the self-checkout screen saying something like 'payment declined, please select another method of payment'. .... .

I guess you do not use contactless then. As there is a limit before PIN has to be entered.
So declines are a normal part of purchasing @ every retailer. Terminal just comes up with declined & please enter card & pin.
