    Me too!

I find the discipline of periodic rewriting good for reviewing holdings too.

Manual alterations between rewrites, fresh copy is scanned in as a back-up.

To all those using an Excel spreadsheet, like myself, do you implement any kind of version control, archiving etc?

So often a spreadsheet can grow organically and you spot an error, and oh, of you could go back  three iterations ago it can be useful.

I'm the corporate world this was always easy with say shadow copies, or some other fancy system.. Home user wise I'm less sure besides saving a copy when you make significant changes.

Spreadsheets are also helpful for the conditional formatting, validation etc that you can have to cross check etc

I use Google Sheets in Google drive for all my spreadsheets which means I can also access them from my phone and other PCs. It does auto version control that makes a copy every save and is really easy to search back in time

Google sheets here too. It has grown from a simple income/outgoings record to quite a complex document many years on.

Monthly in/out, savings/investments, list of accounts/balances/interest info, net worth, investment tracking etc

I review/update it at the end of each month so I know exactly where I am with household finances. Particularly useful no I am retired and income is pretty set for the next 20/30 years.

I am very heartened by the number of people still using M$ Money. My 19yo copy (v14.0 from 2004) still chugs along and does everything I need it to do. I would be totally lost without it as it gives me an instant view of what's happening and allows me to run a single "physical" account as multiple "virtual" accounts (similar to Zopa Pots I guess).
  • It's interesting that nobody has said they have their accountant or financial adviser deal with that for them. Everyone seem to operate a DIY system.

The collation and organising of information is administrative, and I wouldn't expect any third party to be able to accurately classify and reconcile every single transaction across every account I have, especially not a professional who charges for their time. It's far more beneficial for all involved if I generate the necessary tables and reports from spreadsheet data, which then helps facilitate the workflows of accountants and financial advisers in their fields of expertise.

Does it count if I maintain the spreadsheet for my OH’s investments?  Should I charge!

My partner sometimes comments on 'how I keep on top of all of the info' and I do like to remind him with a smile on my face I'm saving him  time and a fortune along the way!

I'm a self confessed control freak and aside from my partner I don't trust anyone else to to deal with our finances; it would cause me sleepless nights and mean I'd need to spend more colouring my hair.

I run Linux on my very old laptop so currently using Gnu Cash for managing multiple accounts.
I have used Grisbi in the past which looks like MS Money.
I think both of the above do have Windows versions

That's because I don't have an accountant or financial advisor.
