Have to agree with the ludicrous price of renewable energy considering sun rays and the wind are free fuels.

This is similar to the complaints that we used to hear about water charges - "it falls from the sky, so why should we pay for it".

If it was so cheap and easy to collect the free energy, then everyone would just collect it themselves. But it's not free and it's not easy. It takes massive capital investment and technical know-how, then costs more to distribute to where it is used, often hundreds of miles from where it is generated.
Though with water  it doesnt have to be privately run and profits going to shareholders.

In Scotland Scottish Water is a stand alone not for profit publically owned utilility and has the lowest charges in the UK. And for domestic users there are no meters.

Whatever method they use, you'll always get people complaining that they are missing out. You've only got to read about people complaining about the fact that they weren't entitled to the Warm Home Discount this year when they were previously entitled to it.
That's because they changed it this year, this being a year in which the majority of previous recipients were most relying on it.  And of course the rollout of the new scheme was a total shambles, people getting it who shouldn't have been and people not getting it who should have been.

EDF already do a social tariff. It’s called Safeguard assist & is about 5% below the SVT. My parents are on it. Don’t know the criteria but they get pension credit so could be that. Don’t know if other energy companies do anything similar

Are they still on it?  Sounds like a capped tariff before the overall SVT cap. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/ofgem-increases-level-safeguard-tariff-due-higher-wholesale-costs

EDF's PDF referred to years 6 and 7 of the WHD scheme, which was 2017/18.

Would be interesting to know their rates and how they compare to (previously) the SVT cap and (now) the EPG.

Just checked their bill & electric is 30.7p ex VAT. Pay by direct debit. They don’t have gas as live in sheltered accommodation

If they're in the Northern supply area that's the standard unit rate https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/energy-price-guarantee-regional-rates/energy-price-guarantee-regional-rates
